History

The name "Maletas" was affectionately given by Mr Carlos V. about 20 years ago as a term that literally means "suitcase" in Spanish and basically means an untalented or "rag-tag" group of soccer players playing pick up soccer. The name stuck ever since. The Maletas United  (or is it United Maletas?) created a Facebook page below which has an annual "Maleta Supreme" award to recognize the player who is "actually regressing in soccer skills and not progressing."  There are some other funny awards like the "Least Likely to Pass the Ball," "Best Striker,", "Best Defender," and even an "Uncoachable B@stard" award.

The original soccer field for the Maletas was not pretty and was originally off Emerson road in Jacksonville, FL near some train tracks.  This rag-tag group of soccer players loved the game so much that they met played soccer there and ran into one of the O.G. Maletas Mr K Patel who later started hosting a game at his place at Jacksonville Golf and Country club for a while. However, that lasted only a little while before the Maletas starting playing at a nice playing field in Jacksonville, FL which is private.  Since 2012, one of the hosts rekindled and super-selected a group of Maletas who still play. Over the last 2-3 years there is a rotation of hosts now at this playing field.
